To Someone I Lost

A short train ride, the chances we would meet

I waited for that brief moment each day

My naivety thought I could compete

What came out, words I thought I’d never say

I want you, but you could never be mine.

Perhaps you, too, were naive not to see

That I wanted more. I said I was fine

Until I wasn’t. I need to be free

From the endless thoughts of what could have been

Eventually, one has to move on

Instead of drowning emotions in gin

You and me. Our life together foregone

Then you told me you loved me. Please don’t lie.

So after all this, must we say goodbye?

I still miss you.
